AS Barnard Castle Scouts gather in Staindrop for the
annual St George’s Day Parade, it will be a proud moment for Group Scout Leader,
Colin Clarke, who is celebrating 40 years with the troop. Scout's summer holiday on top of the worldSep 21, 2004 IT’S been a summer holiday with a difference for one Barnard Castle Scout – six weeks exploring the frozen wastes of Iceland.Peter Williams, 18, made the journey across the Vatnajokull ice cap as part of the British Schools Expedition Society. Trekking up to 15,000 metres a day with full pack and sleeping in tents in perilous, freezing temperatures, the former Teesdale School pupil was one of a group of 65 explorers who took part in the trip, completing a series of scientific experiments including studies of the environment and bird and plant life. He said: “It was the first time I’d done anything like that but I kind of knew the hard work that was involved. “Some of the mountains we trekked up were more than 1,800 metres high so it could be physically draining. “The whole time we lived on rations, dehydrated food that gives you plenty of energy but has very little taste, and there was one time we were trapped in a tent for 39 hours because of a snow storm.” But the experience has done nothing to dampen his wanderlust and Peter, who is due to start an aerospace engineering course at Manchester University later this month, said he will be back for more next year. “I love travelling and hope to go to Peru next year as part of another expedition,” he said. Peter raised the money for the trip through a mixture of part-time work and sponsorship. “I worked as a lifeguard for part of the summer and my parents helped me out,” he explained. “Kirby’s outdoor shop in Barnard Castle and Berghaus helped provide some of the equipment and the Scouts also sponsored me.” “It’s mostly people from down south who take part in the expeditions. Not many people seem to know about them up here. “But the organisers are hoping to get more people involved from other areas of the country and I’d recommend it to anyone.” |
