Saturday, 13 October 2007 PRESS RELEASE
1st Barnard Castle Beavers and Scouts are planting trees as part of the Woodland Trust’s Tree for All Campaign and to celebrate the Centenary.
1st Barnard Castle Scouts have organised a tree planting event at the Ark on the Edge on the 24th of November. 11am to 2pm
The Beavers and Scouts will plant at least 100 trees one for each year of Scouting. The trees have been supplied by the Woodland Trust as part of their Tree for All Campaign. The campaign is the largest children’s tree planting initiative in the UK. It hopes to inspire today’s youngsters to become environmental custodians of the future.
The Beavers have been working hard all year towards their scouting Environmental Group Award. The tree planting is the final part of their commitment to reduce their carbon footprint. Each Beaver will endeavour to carry on with the practices that they have learnt about, like recycling, composting and energy saving. In their time working on the Environment they have had a weekend at the very eco friendly Landgon Beck Youth Hostel. During a visit to Rotters they learnt about composting and using old chip fat as bio diesel. The Beavers are regular visitors to the Ark on the Edge and a wonderful collage inspired by an earlier visit hangs proudly in the teaching suite.
We welcome Barnard Castle Cubs and Scouts who would like to attend with a parent and plant a tree and or some daffodil bulbs from 11am to 2pm on the 24th of November. Please bring a spade and wear wellies or good boots. Anyone planning to attend please email the Beaver Scout Leader address below as we need to regulate numbers and may have to give out time slots.

The UK has less than 12% of woodland cover. Woods are under threat from climate change, development and sheer indifference. If we do not act now to inspire children with a love of nature then beautiful fragile woods will be lost for ever together with species of plants and animals.
